Gower

Three Cliffs and Tor Bay.

Gower, a peninsula of South Wales, is an area of superb natural beauty - so beautiful, in fact, that it was the first area in the UK to be designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. Part of the recognition of the special nature of Gower has been the protection awarded to the area, protection which takes great care to preserve the character of the area and the stone shod homes that make up much of its housing.

A mixture of estuaries and marsh, woods and dunes, long beaches and bogs clinging to the underside of hills mean that Gower is a superb area for bird watchers, whether you wish to see the herons, buzzards and kingfishers that live here all year round or the huge selection of migratory birds that visit the area every year.

Gower Highlights

In this section we provide you with just a few of Gower's many highlights...

Worm's Head

A long promenatory poking out into the sea, Worm's Head features a long cliff walk with superb views of beaches and seas. A colony of seals can be found nesting on ledges below.

Three Cliffs Bay

Voted best beach in Gower by the BBC, this picturesque beach nestles at the end of stream by the three cliffs which gives it its name. See Gower Walks for more details.

Llangenith

This huge long beach is famous amongst surfers. For a brief period in the summer the car park can get full - but the beach is so long that it can take any number of visitors without feeling crowded. Great for bass fishing!

Arthur's Stone

King Arthur was marching with his men when he got a stone in his boot. He took the stone out, and hurled it away - and it landed in the center of Gower. Arthur must have been a giant though - this stone is huge! An alternative theory is that the stone is a meteor. Children will enjoy clambering over the stone while parents will love the superb views of Gower from this lofty point.

Oxwich Bay

At Oxwich bay you can choose between enjoying the long sandy beach, having a walk amongs the dunes, clambering over rocks looking for crabs and shrimps or following the cliffside walk past the ancient church and beyond. The Oxwich Bay Hotel offers refreshment, and a large garden complete with bouncy castle for the children.

Gower Wildlife

Gower is home to a variety of animal life. Foxes prowl fields (and pinch the occassional chicken and lamb), while numerous rabbits graze the peninsula's dunes. Gower's woods are home to badgers, while in the summer nights bats take over from swallows and swifts in keeping the midges at bay and small semi-wild ponies inhabit the marshes. Children will also be entranced by the bouncing white lambs, foals and calves that can be seen on Gower walks.
